We are excited to get a submission from poet Sudeep Adhikari – ‘It Did Not Rain This Whole Winter’ and ‘Grunge and Conscience’. Sudeep’s poetry generally revolves around the theme of seamless continuity between human-psyche and nature, and shows an overarching affinity for the non-philosophy of unity, multiplicity, indivisibility and nothingness. #Hope, Prevail

Beauty of Butterflies

I remember walking in haste
One sunny day in May,
As many of us often do—
Unattached from nature.
It was chance, I guess,
Or fate, I assume—though
I’ve always relied on the empirical,
That I stopped by this particular garden.
Rich in flowers and bushes,
It was like having an optical orgasm.
I fixated on a group of butterflies,
Five or six, resting on a bush with
Strange flowers. They were striking
Shades of red and purple and orange.
I found a connection with them.
Maybe I am a butterfly!” I thought.
Maybe cancer is like the lifecycle of a butterfly.
Maybe my life before cancer is like
The caterpillar before the butterfly.
I remember smiling for the first time
In ages it seemed. I had something
To look forward to, life as a butterfly perhaps,
Colorful and vibrant, after the cocoon of cancer.

Charles Banks, Jr, founder of Spilt Ink Poetry, was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer in December of 2012. After 9 months of remission, the cancer spread to his lungs.  On April 16, 2015, Charles passed away peacefully in his home in Long Beach, CA at the age of 26. He was surrounded by his family and friends during his final weeks. Thank you to everyone for your love and support during this difficult time. We are all so very heartbroken. We wished we could have kept Charles much longer. Please stay close; we will be continuing his work by featuring other poets and adding to his legacy by publishing his unpublished poems.
